Soprano María Brea
We’ve got an amazing group of artists assembled for CANTAMOS, our first project of the 2018-2019 season! Meet soprano María Brea from Caracas, Venezuela. María studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at Juilliard, her special skills include tango, merengue, and belly dancing, and in 2019 she’ll be giving a recital in Spain with International Service for Human Rights.

My name is María Brea and I am a soprano from Caracas, Venezuela. My favorite song is “Mi Querencia” by Venezuelan singer and composer Simón Díaz. What I love the most from NYC is its diversity and art.
Nos gustaría saber: tu nombre, clasificación vocal, canción favorita que no sea música clásica, dónde naciste, que es lo que más te gusta de vivir en Nueva York.
Mi nombre es María Brea, soy Soprano y vengo de Caracas, Venezuela. Mi canción favorita es Mi querencia del cantautor venezolano Simón Díaz. Lo que más me gusta de vivir en Nueva York es la variedad de culturas y arte.

Tell us a bit about your background as an artist.
My first musical experiences were guided by my father. My father is a Music Teacher in Venezuela. There are pictures of him playing the guitar and me singing at age 4. I have been very fortunate because music has saved my life and my family’s life, music has kept us going through the bad times my country is going through.
Cuéntanos acerca de tu desarrollo artístico.
Mis primeros pasos musicales fueron gracias a mi padre. Mi papá es Profesor de música en Venezuela. Hay fotos de mi padre tocando la guitarra y yo cantando a los 4 años. He sido muy afortunada pues siento que la música salvo mi vida y la de mi familia especialmente por las circunstancias de mi país y el lugar donde crecí.

How has music help you and your family through difficult times in Venezuela?
I was born in a very humble slum in Caracas. Seven years ago I had the opportunity to come to study to Manhattan School of Music with a scholarship. I know it sounds crazy, but through a TV program interview in my home, a very kind and generous family decided to support me to study my Bachelors in Vocal Performance. I was so fortunate to have a full scholarship with living expenses covered at Juilliard and I was able to obtain a Masters degree in Vocal Performance. My family is still back home but I am able to modestly support them and help them get through this bad times, I hope soon to be able to help more. Music gave me a future I could have never had otherwise and I’m grateful.
¿Cómo te ayudó la música a ti y a tu familia, a superar las dificultades en Venezuela?
Yo nací en un barrio bastante humilde en Caracas. Hace 7 años tuve la oportunidad de venir a estudiar con beca a los Estados Unidos. Se que suena descabellado pero a través de un programa de televisión que me entrevistó en mi modesta casa pude obtener apoyo económico para venir, una familia muy generosa me acompañó y ellos les debo mi Licenciatura. Tuve la suerte de que Juilliard me diera beca completa y así pude completar mi Maestría en Canto. Mi familia está en mi país aún y gracias a haber completado mis estudios ayudo a mi familia económicamente, modestamente por ahora, en el futuro espero ayudarlos más. La música cambió mi vida, y me dio un futuro que jamás hubiese poder tenido y estoy agradecida.

From reading the news, we know Venezuela is experiencing tragic food shortages and economic turmoil. What are ways someone can learn more about the situation and ways to help?
My country is deteriorating everyday. I would highly recommend people to support organizations such a Dar y Recibir, Hogar Bambi, Senosayuda that help with different needs in my Venezuela. I appreciate when people know about what’s happening because I think that if people send positive thoughts and efforts one day things will change.
Basado en las noticias , sabemos que Venezuela está sufriendo una increíble escasez de alimentos y una crisis económica. ¿Cuáles son los medios en que más gente pueda aprender sobre la situación de Venezuela y en que forma podrían ayudar?
Mi país se está deteriorando cada día más. Les recomiendo que apoyen a organizaciones como Dar y Recibir, Hogar Bambi, Senosayuda que contribuyen con diferentes necesidades en mi Venezuela. Aprecio cuando las personas saben lo que está sucediendo porque creo que si las todos tenemos pensamientos y esfuerzos positivos algún día, las cosas cambiarán.

What drew you to be part of CANTAMOS?
My friend and colleague Linda told me about Cantamos. I immediately emailed to audition and I feel so happy and lucky to be part of this project. Latin American and Spanish music has a special place in my heart and to be able to share it with people of other cultures is a great opportunity.
¿Qué fue lo que te motivó a ser parte de Cantamos?
Mi amiga y compañera Linda me comentó acerca de Cantamos. En seguida les escribí un correo para audicionar y me siento súper feliz de ser parte de este proyecto. La música latina y española tiene un lugar muy especial en mi corazón y poder compartirla con personas de otras culturas es una tremenda oportunidad.
How did you and Linda meet and become friends?
Linda and I met at Martina Arroyo Prelude this summer 2018. Her beautiful personality and artistry made me a fan of Linda! She wrote to me one day and told me she wanted to organize a Latin American concert for a good cause. We did it ! Since then our friendship has grown tremendously.
¿Cómo se conocieron Linda y tú; cómo se hicieron amigas?
Linda y yo nos conocimos en el programa de Martina Arroyo en este verano 2018. Lo que más me encantó de Linda cuando la conocí fue su hermosa personalidad y su nivel artístico. Ella me escribió un un mensaje cuando estábamos haciendo el programa, en cual decía que debíamos hacer un concierto Latinoamericano por una buena causa. Logramos hacer el concierto y desde ese momento nuestra amistad ha crecido mucho.
One of the goals of this project is to promote Spanish-language classical repertoire so more people know about it and more artists perform it. Do you have any favorite works, composers, or singers you'd recommend?
One of my favorite singers has recently passed away, La Caballé. She is, without a doubt, one of the most important singers of the 20th century. Another beautiful singer and one of my favorites is the Cuban soprano Eglise Gutiérrez.
Una de las metas de este proyecto es promover música clásica en español y así hacerla accesible a otros artistas y otras a personas. ¿Cuáles son tus obras, compositores, cantantes favoritos? ¿Cuáles recomendarías?
Una de mis cantantes favoritas recientemente ha fallecido, La Caballé. Sin duda alguna una de las cantantes más influyentes en el siglo XX. Otra hermosa cantante y una de mis favoritas es la soprano Cubana Eglise Gutiérrez
The passing of Montserrat Caballé is truly a loss. Why is she one of your favorites?
It truly is a loss to the world! She is one of my favorites because of her artistry. Caballé’s fiato and legato are something out of this world. She will be missed forever.
El fallecimiento de Montserrat Caballé es verdaderamente una gran pérdida . ¿Por qué es una de tu cantantes favoritas?
¡Realmente es una pérdida para el mundo de la ópera ! Ella es una de mis favoritas por su arte. El fiato y el legato de Caballé son algo fuera de este mundo. Ella será extrañada por siempre.
What’s the most interesting discovery you’ve made while preparing for CANTAMOS?
My most interesting discovery is getting to study music of Catán and learning such an entrancing aria from Florencia en el Amazonas.
¿Cual ha sido el mayor descubrimiento que has tenido preparando la música para Cantamos?
Lo que más me ha sorprendido es finalmente estudiar la música de Catán a través del aria de Florencia en el Amazonas.
Which piece are you most looking forward to singing and why?
I am incredibly excited to sing in the baroque ensemble. I love how rhythmic this music is and I enjoy sharing the stage and energy with other artists on stage.
¿Cuál es la obra que más te gusta cantar de todo el en el concierto?
Estoy emocionada de cantar el ensamble barroco puesto que es muy rítmico y es siempre emocionante cantar con otros artistas y compartir la energía en el escenario.

I think you shouldn’t miss the opportunity of hearing such special, valuable and beautiful music with wonderful artists in a spectacular venue such as United Palace. It’s going to be an unique concert.
¿Por qué crees que la gente debería asistir al concierto Cantamos?
Pienso que no deberían perderse la oportunidad de escuchar música tan especial, valiosa y hermosa con fantásticos artistas en este teatro tan espectacular que es el United Palace. Es un concierto verdaderamente único.
