Handel's Alcina

  • Holyrood Church 715 W 179th St New York, NY, 10033 United States (map)

Project 7

Magic. Love. Music.

Strip away the supernatural powers, disguises, and enchantment, and at the heart of the story is the desire to love and be loved. Through Handel's descriptive and moving music, this 18th century opera based on a 15th century epic poem still resonates with us today.

With generous support from the Washington Heights Musical Society and in collaboration with Dorian Baroque Orchestra, Cantanti Project is pleased to present Handel's Alcina.

Sung in Italian with English super-titles.

Conducted by Dr. James Bates. Stage direction by Antigoni Gaitana.

Dorian Baroque is a New York-based ensemble of musicians who perform on period instruments, presenting orchestral, chamber and vocal music ranging from the early baroque period to the present. The diverse musical backgrounds of their performers bring a distinct philosophy to music making that is focused on exploring the versatility of historical instruments and led by the principles of the baroque period – opulence, exuberance, dissonance, and ornate grandeur.
